The comic references this story: https://www.iflscience.com/scientists-once-stuck-a-dead-salmon-in-an-mri-machine-for-a-very-good-reason-70212 However, the caption proposes a different (and ridiculous) explanation for the results: the salmon actually reacted to the photo, even though it was dead, because it had an immortal soul. Additionally, it claims that only this specific species of salmon have souls, and the effects couldn't be reproduced on any other animal: humans, thinking themselves superior to salmon, refused to see the truth for a century.

- Person 1: In 2009, scientists ran a study that used normal fMRI analysis protocols to establish that a fish's brain was reacting to a photo. However, the study was done on a dead fish.
- Person 2: Wow, I guess the interpretation is obvious: you can't always trust the established methods.
- Caption: Due to professional chauvinism, it took another century for scientists to discover that Atlantic salmon are the only animals with souls.
